Data-Linc Group has added an industrial IEEE 802.11b (Wi-Fi compliant) wireless Ethernet product family to its array of modems known for their highly reliable performance in challenging industrial environments. The newest industrial 802.11b Wi-Fi family, FastLinc, provides fast, high-speed wireless Ethernet connectivity- up to 11 Mbps (over the air data rate)- at distances up to 5 miles using 2.4 GHz direct sequence spread spectrum 802.11b technology. FastLinc industrial grade Wi-Fi 802.11b modems function as a wireless 802.11b access point, wireless bridge or remote repeater and supports point-to-point, point-to-multipoint and peer-to-peer topologies for IEEE 802.11b, Wi-Fi compliant communications. Both Ethernet stand-alone and PCMCIA models are available.

In response to customer request, Data-Linc designed these modems for industrial applications that require high-speed wireless Ethernet communications at a reasonable cost. FastLinc includes many industrial-grade features that offer superior performance compared to commercially available IEEE 802.11b Wi-Fi technology, while maintaining a cost effective price. These features make FastLinc industrial 802.11b Wi-Fi modems ideal for many SCADA, factory floor, material handling and industrial plant maintenance applications.

With so many communication options available today, it is challenging to determine the best fit for industrial projects. With the addition of FastLinc, Data-Linc's experienced technical staff can now recommend solutions for an even wider range of applications such as industrial Wi-Fi and provide guidance in choosing the best technology (frequency hopping or 802.11b) for each project. Data-Linc's highly acclaimed technical support engineers provide no-charge expert technical assistance during planning and project start-up. Their extensive industrial communications and PLC knowledge ensures quick problem resolution to minimize labor cost overruns, which offers real value today.

While many IEEE 802.11b Wi-Fi devices claim long-range communication, Data-Linc delivers. What gives the FastLinc family this capability is power-not high power, but optimal power. While the FCC regulates the allowable levels for wireless modems, there is some flexibility in balancing power at the transmitter (wireless modem) with power at the antenna. More power at the transmitter is not necessarily the way to predict that data will get through. Considering the demands of industrial conditions, Data-Linc set the power level of its FastLinc 810E to 200mW, providing the user greater flexibility in selecting types of antennas with a variety of power gains-YAGI, parabolic grid, etc.-for use, if needed, in high noise, industrial environments so your data will get through.

For portable applications, the FastLinc 800C Industrial PCMCIA Card offers four to six times the RF output power of most commercially available 802.11b Wi-Fi cards. The high output power (200mW) significantly increases wireless coverage for portable computers roaming within plant facilities where obstructions and interference levels are more severe than office buildings. The FastLinc 800C Wi-Fi performance is further optimized when used with FastLinc 810E modems in 802.11b access point mode. The card will also communicate with existing IEEE 802.11b Wi-Fi compliant networks already in place.

Data-Linc has responded to customer need with a cost effective, high-speed IEEE 802.11b industrial Wi-Fi product family, ideal for short- and medium-range industrial applications. With its distinctive array of features and benefits, the FastLinc 802.11b Wi-Fi family continues Data-Linc's legacy of quality data communication products that provide superior performance and data integrity to meet the needs of industry. Whether your industrial project needs a short-range industrial Wi-Fi (up to 5 miles) modem or long-range frequency hopping solution (SRM Family up to 35 miles line of sight) or a combination, Data-Linc is your one-stop source for industrial modems.

For more information regarding specifications and industrial Wi-Fi applications, see the data sheets for both the FastLinc FLC810E IEEE 802.11b Wi-Fi compliant stand-alone modem and the FastLinc FLC800C IEEE 802.11b Wi-Fi compliant PCMCIA card, contact Data-Linc via phone 425-882-2206 PCT or .
